R+V Versicherung

Focusing on the climate target

R+V takes a holistic approach to sustainability as it believes sustainability aspects should be factored into decision-making throughout the company. Not only does this underpin the cooperative idea, it will also ensure that the company is fit for the future. The goal is to be one of the leading sustainability-oriented companies in the insurance sector.

In April 2023, R+V joined the Net-Zero Asset Owner Alliance (NZAOA) in order to reinforce its own climate target. Under the alliance, a number of companies worldwide – mainly major pension providers and insurers – have committed to making their investment portfolios climate-neutral by 2050. One of the key targets is to encourage low-carbon business practices through dialogue with the companies in which members invest.

Thanks to the careful consideration of sustainability risks and the climate target defined for the investment process - reducing greenhouse gas emissions (measured in CO2 equivalents) in investment activities to net zero by 2050 - retail and corporate customers in the life and pension insurance segments are contributing to the transition to a climate-neutral economy through their investment in the collateral assets. R+V also offers unit-linked life insurance and pension insurance policies in which customers can, depending on their preferences, select sustainability-oriented funds for which not only financial decision-making criteria but also environmental, social, and ethical aspects play a role. The proportion of new business involving R+V’s unit-linked life insurance and pension insurance policies classified as sustainable pursuant to article 8 or article 9 SFDR amounted to around 63 percent in 2023.

With a portfolio of around 123,000 insured photovoltaic systems, approximately 1,300 wind turbines, and almost 900 biogas installations (as at October 31, 2023), R+V is Germany’s third-biggest provider of engineering insurance and is contributing to the success of the country’s switch to renewable energy sources. R+V is also playing its part in the shift toward cleaner transportation, with customers who have an electric, hybrid, or hydrogen vehicle benefiting from special conditions for their policy and for their insurance cover.
